Chapter Eighteen

“I’d love to hear Jayla’s side of the story,” Reese said.

“I wonder where she is now,” Kiki said. “I heard she left town after she broke it off with Hunter.”

Reese plugged Jayla Northwood into her people finder app, but found nothing. She tried Jayla Weeks, but that name also came up a dead end.

“There’s a guy named Herbert Weeks who runs a hobby and craft store near my place,” Kiki said. “Maybe he’s a relative.”

“I’ll check him out,” Reese said, then yawned and stretched. “Wow, I’m pooped. I’ll have to pick this up tomorrow.”

Kiki yawned, too. “Now look what you made me do! Oh, well, I’d better get home. Are you going to church tomorrow? Pastor Weathers is holding a special service to commemorate Bella at 10 o’clock.”

“I think I will,” Reese said, thinking that perhaps Ford’s attacker might attend. Not that she’d be able to pick him out of the crowd, but she might get some clues as to his identity.

“I’ll save you a place,” Kiki said. “Hopefully the roof won’t cave in with the two of us there at the same time.”

They both chuckled as Reese followed Kiki to the front door and locked it after she left. Then she headed back to her office. She printed a few items including the police blotter brief information about Hunter and his first wife’s obituary. On yellow sticky notes, she wrote potential leads to follow up on for Ford’s attacker, including keeping a watch on Hunter and following up with Herbert Weeks at his hobby shop.

“He knows,” she remembered Ford saying before he passed out. That still stymied her. Who had Ford been talking about?

Yawning again, she shut down the computer and turned out the lights. Her bed was calling, and by the time she’d gotten ready to crawl between the sheets, her eyelids felt like lead weights. Bo jumped up on the covers and curled up beside her.

After Reese switched on her fan, the humming sound helped her fall asleep. Later, the dreams began and she found herself on a river raft that pitched through rough waves. She screamed when it soared over a colossal waterfall. Down she fell, straight into the crashing onslaught.

At the base, she shot into the freezing depths and her clothes caught on rocks, holding her captive. Panic sank sharp claws into her and she twisted from side to side, trying to break free. Bella came to her rescue in the form of a mermaid. She touched Reese, which transformed her into one of the mythical sea creatures, complete with long flowing hair and a shimmering tail.

Bella took her arm and they swam away in a flash of silver. Joy surged through Reese’s fishy-fashioned body as they meandered through the blue depths.

“Help me,” Bella said, bubbles coming from her mouth as she spoke. “I’m still waiting.”

Reese opened her eyes, took a deep breath, and realized the dream hadn’t been real. Her digital watch noted in glowing red that it was only four o’clock in the morning.
